Short answer: SEO (search engine optimization) is making your website easy for Google to find, understand and trust, so it shows your pages for the searches your customers make. It comes down to four things: the right keywords, helpful content, a fast and crawlable technical setup, and links and mentions from other sites.
SEO sounds technical, but most of it is common sense. Here is the version I explain to clients before we build their site.
How Google decides what to rank
Google does three things:
- Crawls the web by following links and reading sitemaps.
- Indexes the pages it can understand.
- Ranks them for each search based on relevance, quality, usefulness and trust.
If your page is not crawled and indexed, nothing else matters. That is why the first step is always setting up Google Search Console.
Step 1: Keyword research
A keyword is what people type. Good keywords are:
- Relevant to what you offer
- Searched by real people
- Winnable for a site your size
How to find them for free:
- Type your topic into Google and read the autocomplete suggestions
- Check “People also ask” and “Related searches”
- Use Google Keyword Planner and the Queries report in Search Console
- Ask your customers how they describe their problem
Beginners should target long-tail keywords: longer, specific phrases like “dentist website design Karachi” instead of just “website design”. Less competition, higher intent.
Step 2: Create content that answers the search
Match search intent. Someone searching “how to start freelancing” wants a guide, not a sales page. Someone searching “hire web developer Karachi” wants a service page.
Good content:
- Answers the question quickly, then goes deeper
- Uses headings that match the questions people ask
- Includes examples, steps, numbers and visuals
- Shows real experience
- Is better than what currently ranks
Step 3: On-page SEO
On every important page:
- Title tag: include the main keyword, under about 60 characters
- Meta description: a clear summary under about 160 characters that makes people click
- One H1 with the topic, then logical H2 and H3 headings
- Clean URL: /blog/seo-for-beginners/ not /?p=123
- Internal links to related pages
- Image alt text that describes the image
- Schema markup for articles, FAQs, products or businesses
Step 4: Technical SEO
- Fast loading on mobile (Core Web Vitals)
- HTTPS everywhere
- An XML sitemap submitted to Google and Bing
- A robots.txt that does not block important pages
- No broken links or redirect chains
- Mobile-friendly design
Step 5: Links and mentions
Links from other trustworthy sites tell Google people vouch for you. Earn them by:
- Creating genuinely useful guides people want to reference
- Listing your business on reputable directories and your Google Business Profile
- Guest posts, interviews and podcasts
- Partnerships with suppliers, clients and local organizations
Never buy cheap links. It is the fastest way to get penalised.

Frequently asked questions
How long does SEO take?
Usually three to six months to see real movement, longer for competitive keywords. New sites take the longest because Google has to learn to trust them.
Can I do SEO myself?
Yes. The basics in this guide are enough for many small businesses. Hire help for technical problems, larger sites or competitive markets.
Is SEO better than paid ads?
They do different jobs. Ads bring traffic immediately but stop when you stop paying. SEO is slower but keeps working.
Do I need to blog for SEO?
Not always, but publishing helpful articles is one of the best ways to rank for more searches and earn links.
