Short answer: The most useful AI tools for developers fall into five groups: AI coding assistants inside your editor, coding agents that can work across a whole project, chat assistants for planning and debugging, AI design and prototyping tools, and APIs for adding AI to your own apps. Use them to go faster, but review every line they write.

AI has changed how I build websites and plugins. It writes boilerplate, explains errors and drafts tests in seconds. It also confidently writes wrong code. Here is what is worth using and how to use it well.

1. AI coding assistants in the editor

These suggest code as you type and answer questions about your files.

  • GitHub Copilot in VS Code and JetBrains
  • AI-first editors like Cursor and Windsurf, built around chat and multi-file edits
  • Built-in assistants in JetBrains IDEs and other editors

Best for: autocompletion, small functions, repetitive code, quick refactors.

2. Coding agents

Agents go further. You describe a task, and they read the codebase, edit multiple files, run commands and tests, and report back.

  • Claude Code, OpenAI Codex and similar agents that run in the terminal or the cloud
  • Agent modes inside Copilot and AI editors

Best for: larger changes, migrations, writing tests, fixing bugs across files. Read my explanation of what AI agents are if the idea is new.

3. Chat assistants

ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini are excellent rubber ducks.

Best for: planning architecture, explaining unfamiliar code, writing regex or SQL, comparing approaches, drafting documentation and emails to clients.

4. Design and front-end tools

  • AI in Figma and other design tools for layouts and copy
  • Prompt-to-UI tools that turn a description into a working prototype
  • Image generators for placeholder visuals

Best for: quick prototypes and first drafts. Real products still need a designer’s eye.

5. AI APIs for your own products

If you build for clients, the biggest opportunity is adding AI to their products:

  • OpenAI, Anthropic and Google APIs for text, chat and vision
  • Speech APIs for AI call agents
  • Embeddings and vector search for chatbots that answer from a company’s documents

My AI SEO for Rank Math plugin is a simple example: it uses an AI API to fill thousands of missing meta descriptions.

How to use AI without writing bad code

  1. Understand before you accept. If you can’t explain the code, don’t ship it.
  2. Give context. Share the file, the error and what you expected.
  3. Ask for small changes. Big vague prompts produce big vague code.
  4. Run the tests. Better yet, ask the AI to write them first.
  5. Watch for security issues. AI often skips input validation and escaping.
  6. Never paste secrets like API keys or client passwords into a chat.
  7. Check licences and versions. AI may suggest outdated libraries.

Will AI replace developers?

AI is replacing tasks, not the job. Typing code is getting cheaper. Understanding problems, designing systems, judging trade-offs and taking responsibility for the result are getting more valuable. Developers who use AI well will replace developers who don’t. If you are starting out, learn the fundamentals first. My software engineer roadmap explains why.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free AI tool for coding?

Several assistants offer free tiers, including chat assistants like ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini and limited free plans for editor assistants. Try two or three and keep the one that fits your workflow.

Is AI-generated code safe to use?

Only after you review and test it. AI code can contain bugs, outdated patterns and security holes.

Should beginners use AI to learn programming?

Yes, as a tutor that explains things, not as a machine that does your homework. Write the code yourself first, then ask AI to review it.

Can AI build a whole website?

It can generate a basic site quickly, but production websites still need design decisions, testing, SEO, security and someone who understands the code. That is where a developer comes in. Need one?
