Short answer: For most programming, get 16 GB RAM (8 GB is the bare minimum), a recent mid-range or better processor, a 512 GB SSD, a comfortable keyboard and a good screen. Web development runs on almost any modern laptop; mobile app development, AI and heavy Docker use need more RAM and power. Mac, Windows and Linux all work.
Students ask me this every semester. Here is how to choose without overspending.
Specs that matter
| Part | Minimum | Recommended | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| RAM | 8 GB | 16 GB (32 GB for heavy work) | Browsers, editors, emulators and Docker all eat memory |
| Storage | 256 GB SSD | 512 GB SSD or more | Projects, tools and node_modules add up fast |
| Processor | Recent entry-level | Recent mid-range or better | Faster builds and tests |
| Screen | 13–14" 1080p | 14–16" sharp screen | You’ll read code for hours |
| Battery | 6+ hours | All day | Classes, cafés, power cuts |
SSD is non-negotiable. A laptop with an old hard drive feels slow no matter the processor.
By type of programming
- Web development: almost any modern laptop with 8 to 16 GB RAM is fine (web development roadmap)
- Mobile apps: 16 GB RAM or more; Android emulators are heavy. iOS apps require a Mac.
- AI and machine learning: 16 to 32 GB RAM. Serious training happens in the cloud, but a dedicated GPU helps local experiments (what is machine learning?)
- Game development: a dedicated GPU and 16 GB+ RAM
- Data structures, university courses: any reliable laptop
Mac vs Windows vs Linux
- Mac: great battery and build quality, Unix-like terminal, required for iOS apps. Usually more expensive.
- Windows: widest choice and prices, great for games and .NET; use WSL for a Linux environment.
- Linux: free, fast and close to real servers; can be fiddly with some hardware.
All three are used by professional developers. Pick what fits your budget and goals.
Buying tips for students in Pakistan
- Check the warranty and whether it’s local or international
- Used and refurbished business laptops can be excellent value. Check battery health and keyboard.
- Prefer upgradeable RAM and storage if your budget is tight now
- Don’t overpay for gaming looks you won’t use
Don’t forget the extras
- A comfortable chair and a laptop stand protect your back and neck
- An external monitor makes coding much nicer
- A cloud backup of your projects (and GitHub, see Git for beginners)
Frequently asked questions
Is 8 GB RAM enough for programming?
For learning and light web development, yes. For mobile development, Docker or AI work, 16 GB is much more comfortable.
Do I need a MacBook for programming?
Only if you want to build iPhone or Mac apps. Otherwise Windows or Linux laptops work just as well.
Do programmers need a graphics card?
Only for game development, 3D work or local AI training. Most developers don’t need one.
Can I learn programming on an old laptop?
Yes, especially web development and Python. Add an SSD and more RAM if possible, and consider a lightweight Linux distro.
