Short answer: To speed up WordPress: measure with PageSpeed Insights, then use good hosting, add page caching, compress and resize images to WebP, remove heavy plugins, switch to a lightweight theme, limit fonts and third-party scripts, and use a CDN. Images, caching and plugins usually fix most of the problem.

Before you start: measure

Run your homepage and a key inner page through PageSpeed Insights and note LCP, INP and CLS (what these mean). Take a full backup before changing anything.

The 15 fixes, in priority order

1. Upgrade cheap hosting

If your server takes over a second to respond, nothing else will fully fix it. Choose hosting with modern PHP, server-level caching and SSD/NVMe storage.

2. Use the latest supported PHP version

Newer PHP versions are significantly faster. Change it in your hosting panel after checking plugin compatibility.

3. Add page caching

A caching plugin or server cache serves ready-made HTML instead of rebuilding each page.

4. Compress and convert images

Resize images to the size they are shown at and convert to WebP or AVIF. Huge uploads are the most common cause of slow LCP.

5. Lazy-load below-the-fold images, but not the hero

Lazy-loading the main hero image delays LCP. Load it immediately and preload it.

6. Delete unused plugins

Each plugin can add CSS, JavaScript and database queries. Audit and remove anything you don’t need.

7. Replace heavy plugins

Sliders, social feeds and all-in-one page builders are common offenders. Simple features often need a few lines of code instead.

8. Use a lightweight theme

Multipurpose themes load code for features you never use. A lean theme can halve page weight.

9. Limit fonts

Use one or two font families, host them locally, preload them and use font-display: swap.

10. Delay third-party scripts

Chat widgets, pixels and embeds can load after the page is interactive.

11. Minify and combine CSS and JavaScript carefully

Good caching plugins handle this. Test afterwards, since aggressive settings can break layouts.

12. Use a CDN

A content delivery network serves files from locations near your visitors.

13. Clean the database

Remove old revisions, spam comments, transients and leftover tables from deleted plugins.

14. Reduce external requests

Every external embed, font or tracker adds DNS lookups and delays.

15. Turn on object caching for busy sites

Redis or Memcached helps stores and membership sites with many logged-in users.

What to avoid

  • Installing three caching plugins at once
  • “Speed” plugins that promise a perfect score with one click
  • Optimizing only the lab score instead of real user experience

When to rebuild instead of fix

If the site depends on a heavy builder, dozens of plugins and an outdated theme, rebuilding on a lean setup can be cheaper than endless patching. Compare options in WordPress vs custom website.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my WordPress site so slow?

Usually slow hosting, no caching, large images, too many plugins or a heavy theme, often several at once.

What is the best caching plugin for WordPress?

It depends on your host. Many hosts have their own server cache and plugin. Use the one your host recommends before adding another.
